When are Permits Required?

Permits are required when buildings or equipment are constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, converted, or demolished.  Permits are also required for replacement of appliances such as, but not limited to: water heaters, gas ranges, furnaces, space heaters, air conditioners, plumbing fixtures, gas vents & gas fireplaces.

Separate permits are required for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work. A driveway permit is required for a new or replacement driveway. If you’re not sure if a permit is required, please call 612 861-9860.

About Permits

All applications for permits will be made on City application forms prior to any excavations or construction. Completed building permit application forms must be accompanied by two copies of a certified land survey showing all easements, location of structure and elevation in relation to street grade, as well as two sets of building plans. Three sets of plans are required for food handling establishments. Soil tests will be required where necessary.

Permits for residential additions and remodeling are usually issued within one week of submittal if it complies with applicable ordinance and codes. Plan review of other buildings may require more time. Approved plans must be kept on the jobsite available to the inspectors.
