Construction Begins!
Construction on the new City
of Richfield Public Works Maintenance Facility began in
May 2007. Workers started by removing a hill on
the nearly 4-acre site which is located on the southeast
corner of State Hwy. 77 and 66th Street. Foundation
work began in July and the walls went up in October. Public
Works Director, Mike Eastling, anticipates the facility
will have its roof installed by the end of 2007 and
occupancy by June 2008.
The estimated cost is
between $11.5 and $12.9 million.
Why Build
a New Garage?
The existing City
Garage located near 77th Street and Pillsbury Avenue was
partially eliminated when 77th Street was expanded in
the 1990s. This has caused a shortage of garage
space for City maintenance vehicles. What's more,
the garage is simply not big enough to handle today's
larger equipment. The existing building does not
meet code and is beyond repair. The existing
garage will be torn down and the property redeveloped
once the new facility is operational.
Public Works staff
is looking forward to moving into its new home.
The Richfield Public Works Department is responsible for providing
maintenance to streets, parks, and city buildings.
The Department is also responsible for the water supply
and snow plowing. A new building will help the
department ensure the City continues to provide the high
quality of services Richfield residents have come to
expect.
