Seasonal Load Limits

About Richfield's Seasonal Load Limits

The weight of vehicles traveling on Richfield's blacktopped residential streets is limited to 4 tons per axle.  Seasonal weight restrictions are in effect starting Friday, March 14th – May 9th, 2008.

Richfield follows the same seasonal load limit schedule as Hennepin County and the State.

Apply for permit at Richfield City Hall located at 6700 Portland Avenue, $25 for 5 tons per axle max.

Why are Weight Restrictions Necessary?

During the spring thaw, the soil under roads and highways becomes saturated with melted snow and rain. This results in a soft, mushy condition under the pavement. Even loads that would be considered normal at other times of the year can do irreparable damage to the roadway at this time of year.

Exceptions to Weight Restrictions

Some streets are limited to nine or ten tons per axle. In certain instances exemptions to the Seasonal Weight Restriction ordinance may be available to allow up to five tons per axle. If you are planning to have some work done that requires delivery of heavy products, please contact the Richfield Engineering office at 612- 861-9794.
