Safe Routes to School Study

Final Report for SRTS

Updated February 9, 2009

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an international movement to make it safe, convenient and fun for children to bicycle and walk to school. When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from school is an easy way to get the regular physical activity children need for good health. Safe Routes to School initiatives also help ease traffic jams and air pollution near schools unite neighborhoods and contribute to students? readiness to learn in school.

The City of Richfield applied for and received a grant for a Safe Routes to School planning study. This study helped identify both educational programs (student, parent and community education, etc.) and physical improvements (sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals, etc.) that provide safer walking and bicycling conditions for our students. The study includes eight K-8 schools, both public and private, in the City of Richfield.

The results of our study and the proposed Safe Routes to School Plan for Richfield?s K-8 schools were presented at a Community Open House held on January 29, 2009 at the Richfield School District Board Room, located at 7001 Harriet Avenue. Parents of school children were given the opportunity to understand the findings of our study and proposed improvements of the plan, while having the opportunity to provide feedback. Information was also posted on your school?s website and the City?s website at www.cityofrichfield.org, if you were not able to attend the meeting and would like to provide feedback via phone or e-mail. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Asher at 612-861-9795 or kasher@cityofrichfield.org
