MAC Votes on Scaled-Down Sound Insulation Program

The Metropolitan Airports Commission voted, 11-4, in support of a new, scaled down, noise mitigation program at its November 15th (2004) meeting.  The program will offer only air conditioning to homes in the revised 60-64 DNL noise contours that don't already have AC.  Additionally, homeowners must share up to 50% (depending upon the contour in which they are located) of the cost of installing the air conditioning package.

The current sound insulation program, which is finishing up this year, provides new windows and doors, additional insulation, roof baffles and air conditioning to homeowners in the 65+ noise contours. However, under duress from Northwest Airlines, and despite strong objections from affected communities, the majority of MAC Commissioners have insisted that no commitment was made to homeowners in the 60-64 DNL contours to offer them the same package.
