The
City’s Public Works Department is responsible for overseeing the
design and maintenance of City buidings and infrastructure.
The City’s Utility Division staff helps provide and maintain a safe
water supply and responsible disposal of waste water to the City’s
34,000 residents every day. They test the water to make sure it’s
safe, monitor the City’s wells, provide routine cleaning and
maintenance to the City’s 120 miles of utility pipes, and handle
billing.
Engineering Division Overview
The Engineering Division’s mission is to provide
planning, design and construction management support for Public Works operations,
construction and maintenance projects.
This Division provides technical support for:
- The administration of City maintenance projects, such as
sealcoating of blacktopped streets, resurfacing blacktopped streets using mill and overlay
techniques, and replacing broken sections of curb, gutter and sidewalk. These measures
protect the condition of city streets and prolong their life.
- The review of construction plans for private developments
such as Cedar Point, Woodlake Center, City Bella and Best
Buy campus improvements. The division monitors construction of these projects for
compliance with City approved plans.
- Monitor projects by other agencies such as: I-35W
reconstruction and the addition of an HOV lane; reconstruction of the interchange of
Highway 77 and 66th Street, and the redesign of the Highway 62 Crosstown Commons area.

Transportation Division
The
Transportaton Division focuses its transportation efforts on planning and design of different transportation modes, most notably roads, transit, bikeways and sidewalks, and assures adequate coordination is achieved with state, regional and neighboring units of government.
The Division also supports the City in providing analysis of traffic safety and handling traffic control requests such as for stop signs and no parking signs.
The division provides technical support for:
- The administration of the City's Traffic Control Committee. The Committee is responsible for recommending changes in traffic control measures, frequently based on requests made by residents and local businesses.
- Review of traffic collision records to assure that potential traffic safety hazards are identified and corrected.
- Representation of the City's interests at the state and regional levels to assure that Richfield is well served by major transportation decisions.
- Conduct transportation planning studies for the City. Periodic reports on the progress of these studies will be shown on this Web site.

Streets, Parks and Building Maintenance
Division
Richfield’s
Streets, Parks and Building Maintenance Division sealcoats and
resurfaces Richfield streets every year. In addition, staff provides
regular cleaning of City streets. Richfield has more than 20 parks
and staff is responsible for the upkeep by mowing, trimming or
removing trees, cleaning up trash, and maintaining outdoor ice rinks
in the winter months. Staff is also responsible for maintaining City
facilities like City Hall, City Garage, Community Center, Municipal
Liquor Store buildings, Wood Lake Nature Center, and other park
buildings.
